Teaching objectives
Language knowledge
1.
Students will learn something about the plot, the characters and the theme in the novel.
2.
Students will learn something about O. Henry’s writing style and learn to enjoy the beauty of the language.
3.
Students will try to write something to the main character.
Language skills
1. The students’ abilities of reading strategies such as skimming, scanning will be better trained.
2. The students’ abilities of communication and cooperation will be developed.
Affective attitudes to learning:
Get the students involved in the class and enable them to know the real beauty of human nature and the importance of giving and devoting.
Teaching key points and difficulties
The key points and difficulties in this session are how to enable the students to understand the text in a easier and clearer way and make them willing to write and have something to write about.
Teaching procedures
Step 1. Lead-in
1.
Brainstorm
1)
Show the students a picture of a green leaf and ask what it can remind the students of.
2)
Share the writer O. Henry’s information.
Step 2. About the plot
1.
Ask some questions about “when, where, who, what”. (

Read and discussed “what”. (

Read and choose the right word for each sentence.
----What happened to Johnsy?
2)
Discuss with the partner the things Berhman did to make Johnsy change her mind.
----Why did Johnsy change her mind?

Tell the four important elements of a novel (beginning, development, climax, ending)
Step 3. About the main characters
1.
Ask who are the main characters among the four people.

What is the relationship between Johnsy and Sue?

What did Sue do for Johnsy these days?

What did Sue do after the doctor left

Step 4. About the theme
