3. Relate to students’ own experiences and cultivate critical thinking
III. Material analysis:
The material is a passage entitled “The two roads”. At the beginning, it seems that an aged man who recalled his past sixty years and felt regretful for what he chose to do when he was young and he desperately wished for the back of his youth. Actually, near the end of the passage, it is surprisingly only a dream, which has brought a relief to not only the narrator but also the reader. Though the passage is only about 500 words, there exist some new and difficult words as well as the difficult clauses, which may be an obstacle for the students. What’s the more difficult is to appreciate some sentences using metaphor and simile. And it’s really challenging for students to relate to their own stories.
